Test emergency lighting and test and tag appliances at an aged care home

What is going on

Sunridge Aged Care in Bendigo has its six-monthly emergency lighting and exit sign duration test and the annual test and tag of 340 appliances, job J-26-1160, on Thursday night from 8:00 pm. The last emergency lighting test in March found four fittings that failed the ninety minute duration test and their batteries were replaced. Portable appliance tester PAT-03 at the Bendigo depot is out of calibration and has been tagged out, so PAT-05 has been transferred from Braeside. On the pre-visit walk, extension leads were found daisy-chained across a kitchen corridor. Residents are in their rooms and the facility manager will accompany the crew.

Your brief

Carry out the emergency lighting duration test and the appliance testing correctly and safely in an occupied care facility, using instruments confirmed in the register, record every result in the compliance register, raise the extension lead hazard with the facility manager and in the incident register, and close the job with complete records.

• Read the job J-26-1160 record and the testing and certification policy, and check the instrument register to confirm PAT-05 is in service and note its identification for the records.
• Complete a job safety analysis for night work in an occupied aged care home, including resident safety, noise, trip hazards and the ninety minute period when emergency lighting is on battery.
• Start the emergency lighting duration test at the test switch under the supervising electrician's direction, record the start time and check every fitting at the required intervals.
• Test and tag the appliances room by room, recording each item's location, description, test result and tag date, and remove from service any appliance that fails.
• Raise the daisy-chained extension leads with the facility manager, explain the hazard and record it as a hazard in the incident register with the agreed action.
• At the end of the duration test, record which fittings passed and which failed, and record the results in the compliance register for the emergency lighting and for the test and tag.
• Restore the emergency lighting to normal supply, confirm charging indicators, and leave the site tidy with the facility manager signing the visit record.
• Update job J-26-1160 to Completed with the number of appliances tested, failures and the follow-up work needed.
