Receive and put away an inbound container
You are a Receiving Officer on the day shift at the Dandenong South distribution centre.
What is going on
A forty foot container of Kingfisher Beverages sparkling water arrives at dock 3 at 9:30 am. The consignment note shows twenty pallets of sixty cartons each, but the customer purchase order on the consignment board shows twenty-two pallets. Two of the pallets on the container have leaning stacks and one has a torn wrap. The driver wants to leave within forty-five minutes. The last two Kingfisher containers were short delivered, so the Warehouse Operations Manager has asked for a careful count and clear records. Forklift FL-18 is available and FL-11 is tagged out.
Subject: Inbound container from Kingfisher due at dock 3 this morning
A forty foot container of Kingfisher sparkling water is booked for dock 3 at 9:30 am. I need you to run the receival from start to finish: check the consignment note against the purchase order, count and inspect every pallet, record the receival in the stock register and put the pallets away. The last two Kingfisher containers had short counts, so be careful with the pallet count and note anything on the consignment note before the driver leaves. Follow the goods receival procedure and raise any exception the same shift.
Your brief
Receive the container in line with the goods receival procedure: check the paperwork, count and inspect the pallets, deal with the damaged and leaning pallets, record the receival and exceptions in the stock register, and put the accepted pallets away in the correct bays. Report the shortage so that customer service can contact the customer.
Work through it
You do not need to do it all. Doing a few of these will show you what the work is like. Your ticks and notes stay on this device.
What someone in this role would produce
- Completed stock register records for all pallets received, including the three quarantined pallets
- Annotated consignment note showing the count and the shortage
- Forklift pre-start record in the fleet register
- A short shift note to the team leader describing the exceptions and who was informed
Printing this is a record of what you explored. It is not a certificate or a qualification.
