Plan and instruct the Monday 6 am Strength 45 class
You are a group fitness instructor at the Summit Leisure Centre.
What is going on
Twenty-two members are booked for the Monday 6 am Strength 45 class in Studio 1, including Karen Fitzgerald, aged 64 and new to strength work, and several regulars who like to lift heavy. A member became dizzy on a treadmill two weeks ago, the cable crossover on the gym floor is tagged out, and a plate left on the floor caused a near miss last week. The class uses barbells, plates, dumbbells and steps. Jake Thornton wants a plan with options for every level and clear safety points, and he wants you to know exactly what the emergency response procedure requires if a participant collapses mid-class.
Subject: Taking the Monday 6 am Strength 45 class
Jake has asked you to plan and instruct the Monday 6 am Strength 45 class in Studio 1. Twenty-two are booked including Karen Fitzgerald, who is 64 and new to strength work, and a couple of regulars who like to lift heavy. Plan it on the session plan template with a warm-up, main sets and a cool-down, options for every level and the safety points. Check the equipment register for anything out of service, the cable crossover is tagged out. Know where the defibrillator is and what the emergency response procedure requires if someone goes down mid-class.
Your brief
Plan the class on the session plan template with a warm-up, main strength sets and a cool-down, options for beginners and experienced lifters, safety and equipment points, then instruct it with clear cueing, technique correction and supervision, and review it for the next week.
Work through it
You do not need to do it all. Doing a few of these will show you what the work is like. Your ticks and notes stay on this device.
What someone in this role would produce
- Completed class plan with regressions, progressions and safety points
- Screening confirmation for booked participants
- Class review and programs and bookings entry
- Emergency response walk-through in your own words
