What is going on

Sixteen children aged ten and eleven are booked for the under 12 basketball foundation session on court 2 on Wednesday at 4:30 pm. Two are new to the program and one plays in a wheelchair. Priya Nair will observe. Last week a parent abused a junior referee at the hub, so the code of behaviour is front of mind and the duty manager will be nearby. The child safety refresher is due for all coaches by 30 September. The session runs for 60 minutes and the program plan for the term lists passing and catching as this week's focus.

You will coach the under 12 basketball foundation session on court 2 on Wednesday at 4:30 pm with me observing. Sixteen kids are booked, two are new and one plays in a wheelchair. Plan the session on the session plan template with clear objectives, a warm-up, three skill activities that progress, a game and a cool-down, and inclusion modifications for every activity. Read the child safety policy before you start; after the parent incident last week I also want you to know the code of behaviour and where the duty manager is.

Your brief

Plan the session on the session plan template with objectives, a progressive structure, safety points and inclusion modifications, deliver it so that every child is active, learning and safe, follow the child safety code of conduct throughout and review the session honestly for the next one.

Read the child safety and wellbeing policy including the code of conduct, the session plan template and the term program plan, and confirm your Working with Children Check and child safety training are current in the register.
Write the session plan with one to three objectives for passing and catching, a warm-up, three skill activities that progress from simple to complex, a small-sided game and a cool-down, with timings and coaching points.
Plan inclusion modifications for each activity so that the child in a wheelchair and the two new children are challenged and included, changing space, task, equipment or people as needed.
Record the safety points: court hazards, equipment, supervision position, first aid location and the emergency procedure for the stadium.
Set up the court and equipment before the children arrive, welcome each child and parent, and confirm the arrival and collection arrangements.
Deliver the session with clear demonstrations, positive feedback and a group count at each transition, keeping every interaction within the code of conduct.
Complete the review section with attendance, what worked, what to change and any concern, and enter the session as completed in the programs and bookings system.
Describe to Priya Nair what you would do if a parent became aggressive toward you or a child during the session.
