Verify and carry out the Wheatley cremation

You are a trainee crematorium operator working with the Crematorium Supervisor.

Simulated workplaceIntermediate missionCAQA Everlasting Funeral Services

This mission touches on a mature theme. It is fictional. If it brings up something hard for you, you can stop at any time and talk to someone you trust.

What is going on

Alan Wheatley's chapel service is at 11 am on Tuesday at Ringwood and the hearse will arrive at the crematorium at about 12:15 pm. Cremator 2 is due for service so Cremator 1 is in use. The mortuary care register shows a pacemaker was removed on 9 September. The family will collect the cremated remains on Thursday. Last week a coffin plate spelling discrepancy was caught at the crematorium, so Amara Osei wants every check done in order and recorded. The environmental licence requires temperature and opacity to be logged during the cremation, and the Environment Protection Authority audit is next month.

Amara Osei, Crematorium Supervisor
Subject: Cremation of Mr Wheatley on Tuesday

You are rostered with me on Tuesday for the Wheatley cremation after the 11 am chapel service. Please read the cremation and identity verification procedure before you start. I want you to do the documentation check in the interment register, confirm the pacemaker removal is recorded in the mortuary care register, and complete the identity check with Sam when the hearse arrives. Cremator 2 is due for service so we are using Cremator 1. The family want to collect the remains on Thursday, so log the processing and storage entries the same day.

Your brief

Complete the documentation and identity checks, receive the coffin, operate Cremator 1 under supervision to the licence conditions, process and store the cremated remains, and record every step in the interment and cremation register so that the remains can be released to the right family on Thursday.

Work through it

You do not need to do it all. Doing a few of these will show you what the work is like. Your ticks and notes stay on this device.

What someone in this role would produce

  • Completed interment and cremation register entry with every check recorded
  • Temperature and opacity log for the cremation
  • Labelled remains container record and release receipt prepared
  • Note on the Cremator 2 service and scheduling impact
