Run the Barn B morning stable routine
You are a stablehand on the Cranbourne morning shift.
What is going on
It is 3:30 am on 11 September 2026 and you have twelve boxes in Barn B. The Trackwork and Stable Roster shows Coastal Ember on fast work with Sam Vandenberg, Kestrel Comet swimming, and Tarrawarra Gold still in isolation yard 2. Kirra Donnelly, the Stable Foreman, expects every horse fed, checked, mucked out and gear laid out before the first horse goes to the track at 4:30 am. Kestrel Comet is on a daily omeprazole course, and one horse in your barn left half its feed last night. Stewards may inspect the stables this month, so records have to be right the first time.
Subject: Barn B morning routine, you are on it tomorrow
You are rostered on Barn B from 3:30 am tomorrow with twelve boxes. Before you start, read the Trackwork Operations Procedure and the Horse Welfare Policy, then pull up the Trackwork and Stable Roster for 11 September so you know which horses go out first. Coastal Ember is on fast work and Kestrel Comet swims, so they need to be fed early and gear laid out. Record every welfare check in the Horse Register before 9:30 am and tell me straight away if any horse has left its feed or is off in the yard.
Your brief
Complete the morning routine for Barn B to the written procedures: feed to the program, carry out and record welfare checks in the Horse Register, prepare horses and gear in the order of the roster, report any concern to the Stable Foreman and record the omeprazole dose in the Treatment and Medication Log.
Work through it
You do not need to do it all. Doing a few of these will show you what the work is like. Your ticks and notes stay on this device.
What someone in this role would produce
- Completed Horse Register welfare checks for the twelve horses
- Treatment and Medication Log entry for the omeprazole dose
- Updated Trackwork and Stable Roster entries with a rider report
- A short written report to the Stable Foreman on the horse that left feed
Printing this is a record of what you explored. It is not a certificate or a qualification.
