Assess, cost and complete counter footwear repairs

What is going on

Three pairs of footwear have arrived at the repair counter in one morning: a pair of Goodyear welted boots needing a full sole and heel, a pair of court shoes needing new heel blocks and top pieces, and a pair of hiking boots with a split upper that the Footwear Workshop Lead suspects is beyond economic repair. Each pair must be tagged, photographed, assessed, quoted and entered as a repair work order before any work starts. The workshop uses solvent-based contact adhesive at the extracted bench, and a spill there last week means the Lead is watching chemical handling closely. Two of the three repairs must be completed and passed through final inspection today.

Your brief

Receive, assess, quote and record three repair jobs to the Footwear Repair Assessment and Completion Procedure, complete the heel block and top piece repair and the full sole and heel repair safely, record materials used, and inspect and return the finished pairs.

• Read the Footwear Repair Assessment and Completion Procedure and the Chemical Safety Policy section on handling and personal protective equipment before touching the footwear.
• Tag and photograph each pair, record pre-existing damage, and create a repair work order for each in Production Work Orders with the customer, description and requested repair.
• Assess each pair and record the recommended repair, materials and time; for the hiking boots, explain to the Footwear Workshop Lead why the upper cannot be repaired to a safe standard.
• Cost the two repairs from the price list, record the quoted price and promised date on each work order, and prepare a plain explanation of the quote for each customer.
• Raise a Materials Requisition Form for the heel blocks, top pieces, sole leather and adhesive and record the issue against each work order in Materials and Trims Stock.
• Complete the heel block and top piece repair and the full sole and heel repair, using the extracted bench and the flash-off time on the adhesive label, and describe each step.
• Inspect each finished pair for symmetry, bond, heel height and finish, record a final inspection in the Quality Inspection Log and update the work order to Complete.
• Check the adhesive bench, spill kit and flammable cabinet at the end of the job and report anything out of place on the Incident and Hazard Report Form if needed.
