Complete a 100 hourly inspection and resolve a lost tool

What is going on

VH-SFT, a single engine piston trainer, is part way through a 100 hourly inspection under WO-26-1180 and is grounded because a 10 millimetre spanner was unaccounted for at the end of the afternoon shift (SR-26-088). Skyreach want the aircraft back on Friday. Marcus Delaney wants you to take over the check: complete the remaining task cards including the differential compression check and the control cable inspection, arrange the independent inspection of the flight controls, and run a documented tool search of the engine bay and cowls under the tool control procedure. If the work runs past your shift a proper handover record is required.

Your brief

Progress the scheduled inspection through its remaining task cards using calibrated tools and correct records, complete a documented search for the missing tool, arrange independent inspection of flight control work, and prepare a shift handover if the work continues past your shift.

• Read the Tool Control and Calibration Procedure lost tool section and SR-26-088 in the Safety and Occurrence Reports system and plan a systematic search of the engine bay, cowls and surrounding area.
• Carry out the search, record each area checked and the result, and update the safety report with the outcome; if the tool is not found, document the search for the supervisor's decision.
• Sign out the compression tester and the torque wrench from the Tool Control and Calibration Register, checking calibration labels, and note which torque wrench is due for calibration.
• Perform the differential compression check on each cylinder, record the readings on the task card and compare them with the manufacturer's limits.
• Perform the control cable inspection for wear, tension and fraying to the maintenance manual, record the findings and arrange for a second authorised person to complete the independent inspection.
• Draw any parts required from the Parts and Bonded Store Register with batch numbers recorded, and update WO-26-1180 with the tasks completed and outstanding.
• If the check is not complete at shift end, complete the Shift Handover Record Template with open panels, tools issued and the last verified step, and brief the incoming crew.
• Return all tools, record the tool check and report progress to Marcus Delaney.
