Complete pre-departure checks for a workboat job

What is going on

Bluewater Kestrel is booked on Monday to replace a channel marker buoy mooring for the port operator, a job that involves towing Barge BW1 and a crane lift of the mooring block. Tahlia Rees, the master, has asked you to run the full pre-departure checks and bring her the signed checklist before 0700. Last week the port navigation light was found intermittent and a barge contact occurred in a gust, so she wants the lights, the towing gear and the crane sling certificates checked carefully. The forecast is for a fresh north-easterly by afternoon. Kestrel's operational area and limits are in the Fleet and Vessel Register.

Your brief

Carry out the pre-departure checks for Bluewater Kestrel using the procedure, confirm the vessel and job are within the vessel's certificate limits, raise a defect report for anything that fails, and hand the master a completed checklist and a short deck briefing on the towing and lifting hazards.

• Read the Pre-departure Checks and Passage Planning Procedure and the Bluewater Kestrel record in the Fleet and Vessel Register, and note the vessel's operational area, survey date and any restrictions.
• Open job J-26-1183 in the Job and Booking Register and confirm the task, the client, the barge and the crew match what the master has told you.
• Complete the engine room, navigation, communications, safety and deck sections of the pre-departure checklist, recording each item as checked, in date or failed.
• Inspect the towing post, bridle, tow line and the crane sling and shackle certificates and record the certificate dates on the checklist.
• Carry out a VHF radio check with the port and record the time and channel in the deck log.
• Raise a Vessel Defect Report Form for any item that fails or is out of date and report it to the master before she decides whether the vessel sails.
• Prepare a short deck briefing for the crew on the towing, crane lift and wind hazards for the job and the personal protective equipment required.
• Sign the checklist and hand it to the master, then update the job record with the departure preparation notes.
