Audit and update the asset register at a manufacturing client
You are a junior field technician.
What is going on
Tarrant Precision Manufacturing is about to have its factory network segmented so that machine controllers are separated from the office. Monitoring has found at least one controller on the network that is not in the IT Asset Register, and Callum O'Shea will not approve the change until every networked device is known. You will visit the site with Jordan Blake to audit every device in the factory office and on the floor, record make, model, location and warranty, note anything unsupported or out of place, and update the register. The factory floor has forklifts, moving machinery and a site induction that must be completed first.
Subject: Asset audit at Tarrant before the segmentation project
Monitoring found a factory controller at Tarrant that is not in the IT Asset Register, and we cannot segment a network we have not mapped. I need a physical audit of every device in the factory office and on the floor: laptops, desktops, printers, switches and any controller with a network cable. Update the register, note anything out of warranty or unsupported, and flag any device that does not belong. Jordan can drive you out on Thursday. Follow the field work safety procedure on site.
Your brief
Complete a physical audit of the client's networked devices safely, reconcile it against the IT Asset Register, update the register with accurate records, and report devices that are unknown, unsupported or out of warranty to the infrastructure manager.
Work through it
You do not need to do it all. Doing a few of these will show you what the work is like. Your ticks and notes stay on this device.
What someone in this role would produce
- Completed audit sheet
- Updated IT Asset Register entries
- Exceptions list with recommended actions
- Audit summary to the infrastructure manager
Printing this is a record of what you explored. It is not a certificate or a qualification.
