What is going on

Coupe MG-221 Nangwarry West is a 61.8 hectare radiata pine clearfall approved in principle and scheduled to start on 19 October when Crew A finishes Kalangadoo North. The northern access road has a weak culvert and a section of soft base that must be upgraded before B-double log trucks use it. A minor drainage line crosses the south-east corner and a neighbouring landowner keeps horses on the boundary paddock. The coupe will start in the fire danger period, so the plan must include fire readiness, and the haulage split is 60 percent sawlog to Heyfield and 40 percent pulp log to a chip customer. The Forest Operations Manager wants a complete draft harvest plan by 30 September.

Your brief

Prepare a complete harvest plan for MG-221 covering the coupe map, roading works and sequence, landing and snig track layout, haulage plan and truck numbers, environmental and heritage controls, fire readiness, safety controls and the daily records the supervisor will keep.

• Read the Environmental and Cultural Heritage Protection Policy, the Bushfire Season Readiness and Emergency Response Plan and the Work Health and Safety Policy and list the controls each requires in a harvest plan.
• Open the MG-221 and MG-214 records in the Harvest and Haulage Planner, review the completed MG-207 record for lessons on landings and rehabilitation, and confirm the crew and start date.
• Prepare the coupe map with the buffer on the south-east drainage line, the boundary exclusion near the horse paddock, landings, snig tracks and the haulage route.
• Plan the northern road upgrade: the culvert replacement, the base repair, the drainage and the sequence so the road is ready before 19 October, and add it to the planner as a note on the coupe.
• Calculate daily production and haulage: the volume per day, the truck loads, the number of trucks and the delivery split between Heyfield and the chip customer.
• Write the fire readiness section for the coupe: water points, fire trailer location, machine suppression checks, daily restrictions by fire danger rating and the assembly point and escape route.
• Write the safety section including the machine exclusion zones, the manual felling limits on edge trees and the daily pre-start and toolbox talk requirements.
• Update the MG-221 record in the planner with a summary of the plan and submit the draft to the Forest Operations Manager with a list of approvals still required.
