Simulated workplaceEntry missionCAQA Timberline Forest and Wood Products

What is going on

Two loads of Messmate salvage log from coupe GP-09C Burnt Creek arrived yesterday afternoon and were unloaded into bay 9 without being measured or marked because the grader had finished for the day. The batch is recorded in the Log Yard and Stock Register as LB-26-0917, status Received, 27.5 cubic metres by docket. The band mill wants to start on appearance grade hardwood at 10:00 am and the Sawmill Manager needs to know how much of the batch is band mill quality. The logs show fire scarring on the bark, some end splits and, on one log, a fencing staple visible near the butt. Bay 9 is a certified bay and both loads carry certified dockets from a Timberline coupe.

Tomasz Wierzbicki, Sawmill Manager
Subject: Two loads of Messmate salvage log in bay 9 need grading

Batch LB-26-0917 came in from Burnt Creek yesterday and is sitting in bay 9 unmarked. I need the logs measured, graded, colour coded and tallied against the load docket before the morning shift wants to feed the band mill. Follow the Log Yard Receiving, Grading and Segregation Procedure. Some of the logs have fire scarring and end splits, so I expect a proportion to go to yellow or red. Update the register when you are done and tell me if the tally is out by more than 3 percent.

Your brief

Measure, tally, grade, colour code and segregate the LB-26-0917 batch in line with the log yard procedure, update the register, quarantine any log with metal or contamination, and report the tally and grade split to the Sawmill Manager.

Work through it

You do not need to do it all. Doing a few of these will show you what the work is like. Your ticks and notes stay on this device.

What someone in this role would produce

  • Updated Log Yard and Stock Register entries for LB-26-0917 and the quarantined log
  • Tally sheet showing measurements, grades and volumes by grade
  • A short report to the Sawmill Manager with the grade split and any docket discrepancy
  • One Safety and Environment Register entry
