Walk the garden and report a hazard

You are a learner on placement in the community garden.

What is going on

Every Thursday morning Wayne Cooper walks the garden, the shed and the paths to look for hazards. This week you are walking with him. The shed has safety signs on the door and on the chemical cupboard, and the garden has a sign about wearing gloves and sun protection. During the walk you find a rake left tines up on the path, a bag of potting mix split open near the tap, and a wasp nest starting under the shed eave. Wayne wants you to read the signs and tell him what they mean, pick one hazard and fill in the Incident and Hazard Report Form for it, and then add the hazard to the register.

Wayne Cooper, Garden and Facilities Coordinator
Subject: Walk the garden with me and report what you find

Thursday morning we will walk the garden and the shed together for the weekly hazard check. I want you to look for anything that could hurt someone, read the safety signs on the shed and the chemical cupboard, and tell me what each sign means. Then you will fill in an Incident and Hazard Report Form for one hazard we find and add it to the Incident and Hazard Register. Bring your gloves and closed shoes. Last week a learner found the hose across the path, which was a good catch.

Your brief

Recognise and explain the safety signs in the garden and shed, spot the hazards on the walk, choose one and report it correctly on the form and in the Incident and Hazard Register, and talk with Wayne about what to do about it so no one gets hurt.

Work through it

You do not need to do it all. Doing a few of these will show you what the work is like. Your ticks and notes stay on this device.

What someone in this role would produce

  • Your explanation of three safety signs
  • Completed Incident and Hazard Report Form
