What is going on

Coastline Retail Centres has asked Vantage to quote for a quarterly periodic program at its Maroochydore centre: strip and seal of the food court hard floor, restorative carpet cleaning in the management suite and pressure washing of the main entry and forecourt. The work can only be done between 10:00 pm and 6:00 am after trading, with the centre's security officer on site. The food court floor is around 600 square metres of vinyl with grease build-up near the tenancies. The Cleaning Operations Manager wants a site assessment, a task and labour estimate, chemical and equipment selection, a risk assessment for the night work and a written quote ready for review by 18 September.

Mei-Ling Chow, Cleaning Operations Manager
Subject: Quote request: Coastline Retail Centre periodic cleaning

Coastline Retail Centres has asked us to quote for a quarterly periodic program at the Maroochydore centre: hard floor strip and seal in the food court, carpet restoration in the management suite and external pressure washing of the entry. I need a site assessment, a task and labour estimate, chemical and equipment selection, a risk assessment for the night work and a written quote for my review by 18 September. Use the quoting rates in the procedure and price the traffic and wet floor controls properly.

Your brief

Assess the site and the client's requirements, estimate the labour, chemicals, equipment and controls each task needs, prepare a risk assessment for night work in a retail centre and produce a written quote with a scope, price, schedule and exclusions ready for the manager's review.

Work through it

You do not need to do it all. Doing a few of these will show you what the work is like. Your ticks and notes stay on this device.

Read the Safe Use of Cleaning Chemicals and Equipment Procedure and identify the products, PPE, dilution and storage requirements for floor stripping, carpet restoration and pressure washing.
Conduct a site assessment from the drawings and the client brief: measure the areas, note floor types, drainage, power and water points, access hours and the security arrangement.
Estimate the labour hours, crew size and number of nights for each task using the productivity rates in the quoting guide, and select the machines and chemicals required.
Prepare a risk assessment for the night work covering wet floors in a public area, chemical handling, pressure washer use, electrical safety, lone work and the interface with the centre's security officer.
Price the quote with labour, chemicals, equipment, consumables, supervision, insurance and margin, and state the assumptions, exclusions and the client's responsibilities.
Schedule the proposed nights on the job board as provisional jobs and check the incident register for any previous events at the site that affect planning.
Write a review note for Mei-Ling Chow summarising the price build-up, the risks and any item where the client brief was unclear.

My notes: what did I enjoy, and what surprised me?
