Financial and Insurance Brokers
Operate as intermediaries to facilitate the sale and purchase of commodities and businesses, and arrange insurance and loans of money on behalf of clients.
A busy Thursday at the broking office
You are a broker at a small office that arranges loans and insurance, working directly with clients and with lenders. It is 10am. A client is waiting at your desk, a lender is calling back and a renewal for a local business has to be sent today.
Choose what you would do. Then see what happens. There are often good reasons for each choice.
I just want the cheapest rate. A friend says Redgum Lending is the best, so can you just put me with them? I do not need the whole speech.
Compare a few lenders against what he needs and show him the differences
He sees two options that fit better and chooses one. He is glad he asked. A broker's job is to look across the market for a client, not to take an order.
Put him with his friend's lender, since that is what he asked for
It is cheap on paper, but you did not check whether it suits his situation. Three months later he finds fees and rules that do not fit his plans.
Quote him a few and ask which he prefers without any explanation
He picks the lowest rate and has no idea what is behind it. You have offered choice but not understanding, which is what a broker is for.
Last year I had a small claim on my shop. I did not think it mattered so I did not mention it on the form. It was only a broken window. Do you need to put that on the new one?
Leave it off, since it was small and long ago
The insurer later finds the earlier claim, and it counts against her. Not disclosing could put her cover at risk when she needs it most.
Tell her you will phone the insurer to ask if it matters first, and wait for the answer
The insurer says to disclose it. The delay is a day, and Mrs Rossi's quote deadline gets tight. A broker should know that the answer is usually yes.
Explain that insurers ask for it, and help her list it correctly
She is reassured when you explain it is routine. The form is accurate and the quote is fair. Being honest on the form protects her.
My buyer is asking about the accounts. I know last year had a poor quarter, but I would rather they did not see that. Can you give them the summary only?
Give the buyer the polished summary he asked for
The buyer later finds the poor quarter, loses trust and walks away. Hiding a detail can break a deal and the broker's name with it.
Tell Mr Ahmad that buyers will ask, and suggest explaining the quarter with the full accounts
He grumbles but agrees. The buyer sees the full picture with a story behind it, and the deal goes on. You were right, though you might have prepared the explanation for him.
Explain why honesty works better, and offer to help him tell the story well
He sees the point. You help him write a short note about the quarter, and the buyer takes it in stride. Brokers help both sides see clearly.
How it went
At five the renewal is out and the home loan is on its way. Broking means explaining, comparing and sometimes telling people what they would rather not hear. Would you enjoy being the person who reads the fine print so others do not have to?
This is a simplified, fictional situation to help you explore. It is not professional instruction or a test of your ability.
Case study: The cafe that was not fully covered
A fictional case set in a small broking office that arranges home loans and business insurance.
The situation
Hye-jin was an insurance broker at Southgate Financial Services. She was reviewing the renewal for a small cafe owned by a young couple. They wanted to keep the premium low and asked her to renew exactly as before. As she read the policy, she noticed the stock cover had been set when the business first opened. The cafe now held far more equipment and stock than the policy allowed for.
What they did
Hye-jin did not just renew the policy. She called the owners and explained that if something went wrong, they would be paid only part of what they lost. She walked them through the options at different levels, and what each would and would not cover. She told them how she was paid, and let them decide. She wrote a short note on the file about the conversation.
How it turned out
The couple chose to raise the cover a little but not fully. They thanked her for not just ticking a box. A few months later a freezer failure meant a claim, and the extra cover made the difference. Hye-jin kept her note as a record.
What would you do?
- Why did Hye-jin tell the couple how she is paid?
- How do you help someone who wants to spend less when they may need more?
- What do you think it feels like when a claim is paid because of a conversation you had?
