A night on the office tower

You are a commercial cleaner on the evening crew of a ten-storey office building, working through your floors with a trolley, a vacuum and a list. It is 6pm and the office workers are drifting out. You have three floors to finish by midnight, one of your crew has called in sick, and the building is full of small surprises that test your judgement.

Choose what you would do. Then see what happens. There are often good reasons for each choice.

Zoran, a staff member still at his desk

Hi, I am working late. Could you skip my corner office tonight? I have confidential papers out, and I don't want anyone touching them. Oh, and the carpet near the window has a bad stain. Do whatever you need to.

Clean around the papers, wipe the desk carefully and treat the stain without moving anything
This could go wrong

While wiping the desk you knock a stack, and papers slide to the floor. You tidy them up, but Zoran will never be sure what you have seen. Staying away from sensitive papers is part of the trust.

Skip the office as he asked, note it on your sheet and flag the stain for another night
A strong call

Zoran is relieved, and your sheet shows the room was skipped on request. The stain is dealt with the next night, when the room is empty and you have time to do it right.

Skip the desk and papers but go in and treat the stain while he is busy at the other end of the room
Could work, with a catch

The stain comes up well, but Zoran finds your trolley in the corner of his room while he is reading. He had asked for no one to be in there, and he is uncomfortable.

Laila, your crewmate

That stain on the kitchen bench will not shift. My nan always mixes the toilet cleaner with a bit of bleach to get through grime. Shall I try it? It will only take a minute and we are so behind.

Say go ahead, as long as she does it quickly and leaves the door open to let the air out of the room
This could go wrong

Within seconds Laila is coughing and her eyes are streaming. You open the windows and get out, and the supervisor has to be told. Some products must never be mixed, and the labels tell you which.

Tell her not to mix products, read the label together and ask which one suits that surface
A strong call

The supervisor points you to a product designed for the bench, and the stain lifts with a little time. You also write the stain on the sheet, so the next shift knows.

Tell her not to mix anything, but leave the stain for the day crew to deal with
Could work, with a catch

Nobody is hurt, but the stain is still there in the morning, and the office manager complains. A better answer was available if you had checked the labels.

Priti, the crew supervisor

Dev is sick, so we are down one person. I need you to do his floor as well, but you will have the same finish time. I do not mind how you do it, just get it all done. What is your plan?

Do the quickest version of every task on both floors, so everything is at least touched
Could work, with a catch

Both floors look passable, but the bathrooms and kitchen have not been properly done. The next day, someone complains about the smell in the kitchen.

Say yes and do exactly as much as you can, without telling anyone what was missed
This could go wrong

Several tasks are left out, and no one knows. A health inspector finds an unclean bathroom the next week, and nobody can explain why.

Say yes, but tell Priti which areas you will do well and which you cannot reach tonight
A strong call

You put toilets, kitchens and door handles first. Priti arranges for the leftover tasks to be done the next evening. A clear list is more useful to her than a vague promise.

How it went

By midnight, your floors were done properly, a stain was treated the right way, and Priti knew what was left. Commercial cleaning is a job of routine, trust and quiet attention to detail. How would you feel about being the person whose work keeps a whole building healthy?

This is a simplified, fictional situation to help you explore. It is not professional instruction or a test of your ability.

Case study: The bottle in the cupboard

A fictional case set in an evening cleaning crew looking after an office tower, a primary school and a health clinic in a fictional city.

The situation

Aisha cleaned at Eastgate Primary School on weeknights. While restocking the cleaners' cupboard, she found a clear drink bottle on the bottom shelf, half full of an unlabelled blue liquid. It looked like the sort of bottle a child or a careless adult might pick up. No one had left a note, the school was dark, and the bottle might have been left there by a previous cleaner or a tradesperson. Emptying it down the sink would have been quick.

What they did

Aisha did not pour it out or sniff it. She photographed the bottle where it stood, then wiped the shelf around it and moved it, wearing gloves, to a labelled tub on a high shelf. She put a note on the cupboard door and rang her supervisor the next morning. The supervisor asked the school office, who tracked down a maintenance contractor.

How it turned out

The liquid turned out to be a leftover cleaning product that the contractor had decanted into the wrong bottle. It was collected and disposed of properly. The school asked all contractors to label what they brought on site, and Aisha's supervisor included the story in the next toolbox talk.

What would you do?

  • What might have gone wrong if the bottle had been left on the bottom shelf?
  • Why is it better to ask than to guess what a liquid is?
  • Who in a building depends on a cleaner noticing something like this?
